Art Education and Integration - Lauren Austin

This project explores the relationship between race, geography, and education in the city of Richmond, VA, and proposes a role art education may play in addressing embedded iniquities. It uses an interactive PDF format to facilitate the juxtaposition and layering of different pieces of visual data, namely demographic maps drawn up in 1937 - used by banks to "red-ine" minority and immigrant populations, denying them loans - and overlaid maps of poverty levels in contemporary Richmond.
